Week 2 Reflection: Reconstruction Era and Rise of Jim Crow

The reconstruction era was a time were republicans tried to better the lives of blacks in south. This time raining from 1863 to 1877 was a rising and falling time in America. Before the assassination of Lincoln, he was setting a plan to reconstruct the confederate states to provide free union and reconciliation to African Americans. In 1863 Lincoln calls for black suffrage in the south. Republicans were somewhat satisfied with Lincoln decisions. After Lincoln was assassinated in 1864, vice President John became President and he tried his best to take over the government. It is ironic to me how Lincoln had gotten assassinated before freeing slaves and right after his racist vice president had gotten into office. After being denied by the republicans to give some seats in the government to the pass confederate government, John had formed a new all white government which showed resemblance with the confederates. Johns actions showed the power he had to know that he would do anything to bring down blacks. Republicans increased the power of the freedoms bureau and even passed a Civil Rights Act of 1866. To make the Civil Rights Act more allege-able to be Constitutional congress passed the 14th Amendment which gave citizenship to black  men. During the acts and freedmen laws, riots on African American’s were happening across states to send a message to white and blacks on who’s superior and who’s inferior. Congress then passed the 15th Amendment in 1869 so African American’s can continue to elect republicans and make the republicans win. Republicans, back then, made efforts to improves the lives of African Americans. Groups like the KKK did lynching’s and threats so blacks can fear voting and/or running for office. Jim Crow laws and State Laws were also made to prohibit blacks from vote. Along with the grandfather clause. These acts were set by the racists to make the blacks feel inferior and fearful of taking power. During all of the threats and actual killing, the reconstruction act also created taxes because of the new public and free schooling, asylums, and roads. Northern citizen did not like paying taxes and had already felt fighting for reconstruction was hard enough so a lot gave up.Knowing that Northern had given up easily showed that people will fight for you until they get affected by the problem you are facing. All of these major factors and disappointments reflected in the 1877 fall of reconstruction. Jim crow and State Laws were still going strong, which resulted in the rise of hire racism and discrimination against blacks. The failure of reconstruction was a celebration for southern whites which resulted in more racism and confederacy.

This picture shows the ties connected between the whites and racist and how blacks were seen as inferior to them. "Worse than slavery" quote also showed how the blacks were still being held in captivity and were still somewhat enslaved. Source: google images.

With W.E.B Du Bois “the great American Assumption,” I disagree with the assumption. I do get the ideology that you work hard to get to where you want to go but it is major facts that contributed to blacks not being able to reach a high standard of success back in those times. Through reconstruction and the help from northern whites, blacks were becoming success but at the same time still had to deal with the failure to meet everyone’s expectation. This means that no matter what they did or how many people with power tried to help, they were always oppressed. This type of oppression lives on till this day, blacks are just powerful than back in the 1860s and 1870s.

Test Post

Jazmin Kelley making a test post for her blog. This is for HIS 136.

The Introduction of Jazmin, a Hardworking Psych Major.

Hi, my name is Jazmin Kelley and I am a second semester freshmen majoring in Psychology. I am from St. Louis, Missouri but me and my family recently moved to Charlotte, North Carolina last September. We moved for a much better and saver life. Being from St. Louis and growing up in Ferguson , the environment did not get bad until about the year 2014. After the Michael Brown case, there was an increase in crime rate and the house value in the neighborhoods went down. My mom wanted to move somewhere safer and much more beautiful, with better weather. She chose to move me and my family to Charlotte and so far we love it here.

I decided that I wanted to Major in Psychology when I was going into my Junior Year of High School. I realized my love for helping others and understanding why we as humans think the way we do. I love researching and finding out about different disorders and the causes of them. I am very interested in psychology and all of my characteristics fits into being one. I am a good communicator and listener, I am a hard worker, I am trust worthy, and I am patient. My favorite class last semester was Sociology. although I love psychology, sociology is another favorite of mines, learning about the world and how different countries and cultures help with the mindset of people and the way people view certain things and situations. I love learning about other countries differences in values, religion, norms, teaching, etc.

One of my favorite movies I had seen recently was “The Hate You Give.” I had fallen in love with the movie because I understood the anger but yet sadness of the story line. I watched it twice in the theaters and cried even harder watching it the second time. With the incident that happened in Ferguson I connected to the movie instantly and even had flashbacks of the events that occurred. This movie made me more aware of how we, as a people, do need to fight back at injustice behavior but in a peaceful way.

Besides psychology, a big dream of mine, since I was a little girl, is music. I do love psychology I am planning to do both but my passion is music. I’ve been singing since I was six and when I was sixteen I was able to call myself a recording artist and songwriter. I am a very hard worker and both psychology and music is my dream,  I want to do both and yet have time to travel the world at a young age. I know that’s a lot of work, I am already stress from it *laughs* but I am also prepared for it.
